A review of semantic types of motion verbs
This paper addresses the semantic classification of verbs of motion within
a cognitive semantic framework. In cognitive semantics, verbal motion
expressions are often divided into three elementary groups, namely objective
(e.g.
A boy is running in the yard
), abstract (e.g.
The milk is about to go sour
)
and subjective motion (e.g.
A fence runs from plateau to valley
). The first
type refers to what is normally understood as motion, a concrete movement
of some entity through 3-dimensional space, whereas the others refer to
situations where nothing actually moves regardless of the verb of motion. In
this paper, it is suggested that earlier classifications may have overlooked
