According to their linking rules, Moksha possessive case endings can be
classified into the categories below. These suffixes are added to the stem (that
is most often the dictionary base form) under identical conditions: a) after vo-
wels, the variant containing a suffix-initial consonant is used, b) consonants
are always (or more often) followed by the variant containing a suffix-initial
vowel, c) after consonant-clusters, it is usually the variant with the suffix-
initial vowel that is used.
The nominative
a) a suffix-initial vowel is always present in stems ending in consonant:
1
st

definite declension plural nominative
The genitive: a) Nominative +
-ń,
except for b) 3
rd
person singular genitive
(one possession):
-n-c
(a suffix-initial vowel is always present in stems ending
in consonant). Here – unlike in all the other persons – the genitive suffix
precedes the possessive suffix.
The dative: a) Genitive
ń + -ďi,
except for b) Px3Sg
-nc-ti,
Px3Pl
-sn
ä
-n-di
(that is hard
-ti,
and
-di
) and for c) short forms, where the
-ťi
suffix is added
directly after the possessive suffixes:
-źťi
(Px1Sg),
ć-ťi
(Px2Sg).
The possessive suffixed forms in the dependent cases do not differ from the
corresponding Erzya forms. Singular Moksha suffixes take the same possessive
suffixes as Erzya ones; that is:
vaľmä
’window’ : (Iness)
vaľma-s

nk

sk

windows’ etc.
