Morpheme alternations in the Moksha-Mordvin definite
and possessive declension
The linking rules in the nominative of the definite declension are most
simple: 1) The
suffix is most often added to the base form (NomSgIndet) ir-
respective of its ending:
keńkš-ś
’door’
.
2) After a nasal consonant, the suffix
is affricated:
on
’dream’ :
on-ć.
3) The stem-final vowel of sequences after certain
word-internal consonant-clusters
(-C + k
ä
, g
ä
, d
ä
, ď
ä
, m
ä
)
is dropped:
pang
ä
’mushroom’ :
pang-ś.
The plural suffixes of the definite declension are based on those of the inde-
finite plural declension. Therefore, from the morphological aspect, morpho-
phonological alternations similar to the ones in the singular number of the in-
definite declension are not observable in these suffixes. In the dependent cases,
only analytic forms are used.
The greatest, irreconcilable differences between the Erzya and Moksha no-
minal declension system are present in the grammatical cases of the possessive
declension (nominative, genitive and dative).
